Learning to Listen

Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.

When Samuel was just a boy, he served in the house of the Lord under Eli. One night, Samuel heard his name being called. At first, he thought it was Eli. But after it happened again and again, Eli realized something important — it was the Lord calling Samuel.

Eli told him to say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

That is a simple prayer, but it is a powerful one.

Sometimes we are so busy asking God to bless our plans, fix our problems, or answer our questions that we forget to simply listen. Samuel did not know everything yet. He was still young. He was still learning. But he had a heart that was willing to hear from God.

And the good news is, God still speaks. He speaks through His Word, through His Spirit, through prayer, and through the faithful guidance of others. The question is not whether God can speak. The question is whether we are willing to listen.

This week, take a quiet moment and pray Samuel’s prayer: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
